Panajachel is the portal for the other 11 villages surrounding Lake Atitlan. All the major banks are represented, international restaurants, super markets, hotels and easy transportation to all the lake villages, Xela, Guatemala City, Chichicastenango and Antigua. 

 

Panajachel, one of the world’s most interesting locations to settle as ex-pat or to visit as you are travelling away some time of your life. This hippy town looks like any other but houses a unique mix of Mayan and modern traditions. Panajachel has a archeological museum, indigenous market, international artisan market, colonial chruch and many Spanish schools. Stay there for a couple of days; it is worth checking out Pana as the locals like to call it. 

 

In August 2010 the local community started a new school in Panajachel. It's name is "Panajachel Colegio Internacional" and the college will receive Guatemalan accreditation in 2011. Their goal; to have an outstanding English school which can provide the education necessary for the students to be able to continue their study in any other country.

 

Panajachel has been a favourite with ex-pats for decades. Many come here to settle down since it is so close to the United States. But you will also find many Europeans, and South-Americans here, all mixed up with the local population. The town has grown and properties in Panajachel have reached high prices, especially at the lakefront. You can find a Hotel in Panajachel for Q 25 or for $250 a night; it all depends on the quality and location you desire.
